Yesterday we spent the day putting the monitor system together. The monitor system is the equipment that is used to help the musicians here themselves and each other. It includes monitor speakers, a mixing board, and microphones. This system is completely unique to the artists and has very little to do with what the audience hears. What the audience hears is called the front of house, or FOH system. So I helped Tom, the monitor tech, all day putting monitors in place and labeling cables so it will be easy to set up each day on the road. Our biggest challenge of the day was the drum arm. For those of you who are unfamiliar, this band consists of 3 members and the drummer is probably the most popular and recognizable, due to his talent and abundance of tattoos. So they have built a 40 foot drum arm that is suspended and will extend out over the audience during the show. We have the responsibility of running microphone cables and power to the riser. The arm is made completely of aluminum and the floor is a grate, so the audience can see through from below. I'll eventually get pictures. So we spent about 3 hours trying to run these cables neatly and out of sight from the audience. Today we will finish up odds and ends and put together the microphones for the drum kit that stays on stage. Monday we should finally start to see the show rehearse. The rumor mill says we might have Tuesday and Wednesday off because Travis, the drummer, has a show and another photo shoot. Our department already is talking about renting a car and seeing the sights. I think they are excited to show me Los Angeles. I like it!
For fun I haven't really done much. I took a bus downtown to see a movie at the theater next to the Staples Center(see photo). Quite impressive, never been to a theater that had 2 stories. Other than that I try to stay outside cuz the weather is so unbelievable. Even when it gets a little hot during the day, it's pretty dry so I'm not drenched in sweat.
I looked into going to church this morning, but interestingly all the churches near here didn't have services earlier than 10am. Well, except for the catholic church. :) I should be back home next Sunday for 1st Alliance.
Well that's all I got for now, I'll try to take more pictures next time.
